Since 1979, the Illinois Street Food Emporium has been a cherished culinary staple in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood of Indianapolis. More than just a restaurant, we're a local landmark—a welcoming cafe, a vibrant deli, and an incredible bakery that has been serving generations of families.

Our Heritage & Commitment to Quality
Founded by Ernie and Sue Kobets in 1979 and today owned by Matthew Williford, the Illinois Street Food Emporium helped pioneer the idea of upscale fast-casual dining in Indianapolis, a concept that still defines us today.
New Ownership, Same Excellence
August 2025 marked an exciting new chapter for the Emporium. The business was acquired by a new ownership group led by local entrepreneur Matthew Williford.
As a dedicated long-time patron, Matthew's vision is one of preservation and respect. He is committed to upholding the Emporium's legacy, ensuring that the staff, the menu, and the comforting, familiar experience all remain intact.

- In 1979, at 5550 N Illinois St, Indianapolis, where it still is. Ernie and Sue Kobets founded it as a cafe, deli and bakery for the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood.
- Who owns the Emporium now?
- Matthew Williford, a long-time regular, who took over in August 2025 with a commitment to keep the staff, the menu and the from-scratch kitchen as they were. Head baker Sherry Culpepper runs the bakery.
- What does 'scratch kitchen' mean here?
- The bread, croissants, biscuits, pies, cakes and cookies are mixed and baked in our own kitchen every morning; the soups, dressings, chicken salad and tuna salad are made in house; the omelets and sandwiches are cooked and built to order. No mixes and no preservatives.
- What is ISFE?
- Illinois Street Food Emporium. Neighbors also call it the Emporium, the Food Emporium, or the Food Emporium on 56th. Same place, same corner, since 1979.
- What are your hours?
- Monday: 7 AM — 3 PM; Tuesday-Friday: 7 AM — 5 PM; Saturday: 7 AM — 2 PM; Sunday: Closed.
- Do you do catering and wholesale?
- Both. Catering covers breakfast, boxed lunches, hot luncheons and events across Indianapolis, delivered and set up. Wholesale bread and pastries go to cafes, coffee shops, grocers and institutions across Central Indiana, baked to order each morning.
